Suggested revision: revise the order in which family planning methods are listed in section 3.
Rationale: The methods are listed in order of efficacy, from most to least effective. It is important
that methods are listed in this order, as this has implications when respondents specify
more than one method for current use. However, recent studies have resulted in revised
standard failure rates (see Hatcher et al. (2011), Contraceptive Technology, p. 50; Arevalo
et al. (2002), Efficacy of a new method of family planning: the Standard Days Method.
Contraception 65(5):333-338).
Specific changes: To reflect known typical use failure rates, methods should be listed in the following
order:
Female sterilization
Male sterilization
IUD
Injectables
Implants
Pill
Lactational Amenorrhea Method
Standard Days Method
Condom
Female condom
Rhythm method
Withdrawal
Emergency contraception
