Column 1 of the Calendar (VCAL_1) contains information on contraception, pregnancy, births, and pregnancy termination. The current coding for pregnancy termination, T, does not differentiate between spontaneous and induced abortions. It would be useful to be able to distinguish between the two, as the two types of terminations may result in different contraceptive behavior. For example, a woman who wanted more children but had a pregnancy that ended in stillbirth may be less likely to use any method of family planning than a woman who terminated an unintended pregnancy. Spontaneous abortions can be coded as "S" or "M" and induced as "T" or "I."
