Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

"NA" in the variable label means that the variable is part of the core questionnaire but was omitted from this survey. The decision to omit was made by the country (in this case, India). Such decisions are presumably based on whether the implementing agency or the technical advisory committee believes the responses would be both accurate and useful. If the data had been collected you would find them in the data files.
