Below is a response from one of our experts, Dr. Tom Pullum.

DHS reports the median age rather than the mean age for various events because the mean can only be calculated if the event has happened to everyone. The median can be calculated as soon as the event has happened to at least half of the people at risk.

The attached text file is a mini Stata program to do what was requested. To calculate the mean age at childbearing by birth order, for 3 year period preceding the survey.
