While the variable on drinking water is a standard variable in terms of having a standard name, the response categories are survey-specific and vary widely across samples, including across different years for the same country. In IPUMS-DHS, we created a single variable to cover the drinking water information, where the same code means the same thing across all surveys, and we had to create a 4-digit variable to retain all detail across surveys. The first digit identifies broad categories that the researcher might combine, while the second, third, and fourth digit provide additional detail, as shown here:

This variable is based on the household variable for drinking water (HV201), and we link the household and woman's files to the children (KR) and birth (BR) files in IPUMS-DHS, so this is the drinking water variable for the KR (child) cases in IPUMS-DHS.
