Following is a response from Senior DHS Data Processing Specialist, Noureddine Abderrahim:

The variable M71 in the Ethiopia DHS 2011 comes from two questions in the survey 443 units and 443 numbers. Q.443 units takes one digit and Q.443 numbers takes two digits (see the questionnaire in the final report of the survey: https://www.dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-FR255-DH S-Final-Reports.cfm). Both answers, units and numbers, were combined into one variable, M71. The first digit is for the digits, hours, days.. and the two following digits are the numbers of these hours, days,.. . For example, the answer to question 443 is 1 day. The units for this example is 2 and the numbers are 1. In the questionnaire, 2 followed by 1 are written in the paper questionnaire. In the recode data file, M71 is coded as follows: 201. For more information on some codes used for the variables of the recode data file, please consult the DHS Recode Manual.
