I'm interested in comparing the characteristics of people who are employed but have been absent from work to those who are employed but have not been absent from work in Uganda from the 2011 UAIS. I am a bit confused by the three variables I am considering and any help would be much appreciated! I'll do my best to explain my quandary below.
The three variables related to employment/absence are:
v714: "currently working"
v714a: "responded has a job but is currently absent"
v731: "respondent worked in the last 12 months"
However, v714a seems to be the same thing as v714 since a cross tab of the two reveals that the same respondents who are not currently working are also coded as having a job but currently being absent. (See table 1.) Those who are listed as currently working in v731 are included in the group of those who are currently working in v714, but are coded as missing in v714a. My question is then whether absence should be 0 for people who are coded as currently working, 1 for those who are coded as on leave from a job and missing for those who are coded as not currently working or those who have not worked at all in the last year.
I would like to create a variable that accurately captures absence, and should it be based on currently working or worked in the last 12 months? Any suggestion on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks in advance.
