Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Kerry MacQuarrie:

In the 2016 South Africa DHS, the vcal_1 code "I" = INJECTABLES - 2 MONTH NUR-ISTERATE, which is differentiated from 3 = the usual 3 month Depo.
