HbA1C is being tested at the National AIDS Research Institute in Pune, using dried blood spots collected during the NFHS-5 fieldwork. This is largely an independent operation, although NARI has been collaborating with the International Institute for Population Sciences and The DHS Program. It was expected that the testing at NARI would take about one year, so it was decided not to include the HbA1C results in the NFHS-5 national or state reports, and not to include the data in the standard NFHS-5 recode files. NARI will eventually be coming out with an independent report on both the HbA1C and Vitamin D tests, but we are not aware of the expected timing of that report or whether the data will eventually be publicly available. We don't have any information on the final number of HbA1C tests that were done, but the sample sizes were originally expected to be about 15,000 tests at the national level, including 2,560 total tests for the states in the South, and 215 tests in Kerala.
