Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

If you want to switch to an aggregate-level analysis, for example with regions as units, it is easiest to use the "collapse" command. This will construct totals or means within subgroups. You can also use "egen total" to get totals in subgroups.
