One of the tasks I found cumbersome when using the original DHS files was harmonizing and adding a new variable to a pooled dataset. With IPUMS DHS, this is easy.

Here's how it works. On the IPUMS DHS home page, click on the MY DATA EXTRACTS link. It's on the upper left of the page; the second link from the top.

index.php?t=getfile&id=980&private=0

That will take you to your personalized data file page. In the row of for each data extract--right in the middle of the row--you'll see a link to "Revise." Click on that, click on "Change" in the VARIABLES row, add the new variables you want, and click "View Data Cart" to check out. Your new file will have all your original variables as well as the ones you just added.
