The DHS Program datasets download system allows for bulk downloading to assist those users who are approved for a large number of countries/datasets. To use the bulk downloading system, data users must first install a download manager, which, due to authentication requirements, MUST be an extension or a plugin to a browser. There are a number of download managers available for each of the major browsers. In the past, we have recommended two different extensions: "Chrono Download Manager" and "Simple Mass Downloader". While we currently recommend using "Chrono Download Manager", both extensions are available for download. We have outlined the instructions for using each below.
Follow these steps to install the "Chrono Download Manager" for Chrome (RECOMMENDED):
- Open Chrome browser and go to this link: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/chrono-download-man ager/mciiogijehkdemklbdcbfkefimifhecn
- Click on the "Add to Chrome" button.
- It will ask "Add "Chrono Download Manager"?"... click the "Add extension" button.
- The extension should automatically install, and the interface will display general instructions and other information.
- Make sure to take note of the advice/warning in the 'green box' about making sure the "Ask where to save..." check box is not checked and about allowing "Chrono Download Manager" to access file URLs.
- If you click on the puzzle piece at the right-hand side of the URL search bar, you should see "Chrono Download Manager" in your list of available extensions. If it appears, then the extension was installed correctly.
Now you need to login to your Dataset User Account on the DHS Program website and follow these steps:
- After logging into your Dataset User Account, select a project.
- Click on the "Download Manager" button.
- Select countries, file data type, and file format type.
- Click the "Build URL File list" button.
- Just above your selections, there will be a link that says, "Text file with URLs."
- Click that link, and a new tab should open with the list of URLs for the datasets from your selection.
- Copy the entire list of URLs.
- Click again on the puzzle piece icon at the top right of the URL; select "Chrono Download Manager"; then select "Open Manager" to bring up the "Chrono Download Manager" interface.
- Click on the big '+' icon at the top left of the "Chrono Download Manager" interface to start a new task.
- Paste the URL list you copied earlier into the 'URL' field and select 'Start' (NOTE: the copied URL list may preload into the URL box).
- The download process should start automatically.
Follow these steps to install the "Simple Mass Downloader" for Chrome:
Please note that you will be required to create a login using your Google Account or email address to use the "Simple Download Manager" extension.
- Open Chrome browser and go to this link: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/simple-mass-downloa der/akleeoemmhoghpglhmbannnecclchbhb
- Click on the "Add to Chrome" button
- It will ask "Add Simple Mass Downloader?"... click the "Add extension" button.
- The extension should automatically be installed.
- If you click on the puzzle piece at the right-hand side of the URL search bar, you should see "Simple Mass Downloader" in your list of available extensions. If it appears, then the extension was installed correctly.
- Launch the "Simple Mass Downloader" menu by selecting it from the list of available extensions.
- Click "Login" at the top right corner of the "Simple Mass Downloader" menu. Create a login using your Google Account or your email address. After logging in, you will receive a message that says, "Login Success, Please reopen the extension!" ... Click "OK".
- Select the puzzle piece at the right-hand side of the URL/search bar and click "Manage extensions". Under "Simple Mass Downloader", select "Details", then toggle the switch next to "Allow access to file URLs".
Now you need to login to your Dataset User Account on the DHS Program website and follow these steps:
- After logging into your Dataset User Account, select a project.
- Click on the "Download Manager" button.
- Select countries, file data type, and file format type.
- Click the "Build URL File list" button.
- Just above your selections, there will be a link that says "Text file with URLs".
- Click that link, and a new tab should open with the list of URLs for the datasets from your selection.
- Copy the entire list of URLs.
- Click again on the puzzle piece at the top right to bring up the Simple Mass Downloader menu.
- Click on the "Paste Links" icon near the bottom left of the interface.
- Select "Open in Dashboard" to open the "Simple Mass Downloader" dashboard.
- In the top right corner of the interface, select "Download ZIP" --> "OK" or "Save to Folder" --> "Select Folder" --> "Allow", depending on how you would like to download the files. The files will begin downloading.
You can easily disable these extensions by going into Chrome browser settings; then extensions; then clear the 'enable' checkbox. To turn it back on just go back to the same screen and click enable.
