Collecting accurate age information is not always easy but important for many indicators. One example is school attendance indicators (e.g. net/gross attendance rates) which are calculated based on "school-age" populations. In order to make accurate estimates of "school age," children's age at the beginning of the school year is required. Currently the age data is collected by the question, "How old is (Name)?" Only with this information it is not possible to compute the exact age at the beginning of the school year. It is suggested therefore that the date of birth also be asked by a question like, "What is (name)'s date of birth?"

I support this recommendation. To reduce the response burden, the question on date of birth could be asked for a subset of all household members, for example persons aged 0-24 years.
