Dear all,

I am trying to construct cluster-level weights for a multilevel analysis on several Sub-Saharan African countries. To do this, one of the elements that I need is, for each country, the average number of households in the enumeration areas, per region and type of place of residence (urban and rural). I have managed to find these data for most of the SSA countries I am analysing: this information is provided in Appendix A of the final report of each survey, usually in table A.2 or table A.3, and as far as I understood such data are usually retrieved by the authors of the reports from censuses data of the countries.
However, I can't find such information for Mozambique DHS 2011. Table A.1 shows the "Alocação da amostra dos agregados familiares e conglomerados segundo os domínios de amostragem por área de residência" - that is, the sample allocation of households and enumeration areas according to sampling domains by area of residence. Hence, they do provide the number of enumeration areas per type of place of residence, but not the mean number of households per enumeration area according to the region and place of residence: the first column of the table provides only the "expected number of households" (so, not the "average" one according to the census) and not divided into urban and rural areas.
Can anyone clarify where I could retrieve this information? I have even looked online for the 2007 census of Mozambique, but I couldn't find the information I needed, also because I am not a native Portuguese speaker. Perhaps I am not reading the report correctly, it just seems weird that the information is provided correctly for all countries I am analyzing, but not for Mozambique.

I attach the "model" of the information I need (retrieved from Angola 2015-2016 DHS report)

Thanks to everyone who will try to help.

Best

Following is a response from DHS Senior Sampling Specialist, Mahmoud Elkasabi:

It is true that the 2007 frame information were not provided in the final report of Mozambique DHS 2011. Luckily the required information are provided in the final report of the Mozambique AIS 2015 https://dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/AIS12/AIS12.pdf

Since both surveys are based on samples selected from a master sample that was selected from the 2007 census frame, using the information provided in the AIS 2015 report should be enough for your purpose.

Dear Dr. Elkasabi,

Thank you for your kind reply, I found the information I needed in the file you suggested. You were immensely helpful!

I am also having similar troubles with the Nigeria DHS 2018. In the final report, one can find the number of EAs per region and type of place of residence, but not the average size in terms of number households. This information is present in the DHS 2013 final report, but only by region, and not by type of place of residence. Do you have any suggestion on how I could approximate such information?

Also, I am having the same issue with the Congo Democratic Republic DHS 2014, where in table B2 they provide the number of EA per region and type of place of residence, but nothing is mentioned about the average size of the EAs in terms of number of households. Could this information be found anywhere? Do you know?

I would be very grateful if you (or anyone else who knows how to solve these issues) could further help me.

Thank you,

Best,

Chiara

Following is another response from DHS Senior Sampling Specialist, Mahmoud Elkasabi:

For Nigeria DHS 2018, you can use the numbers in Tables A.1 and A.2 to calculate the average population per EA by strata Ph, then you can estimate the average number of HHs per cluster Mh using the average HH size from the survey results Dh as Mh = Ph / Dh. Dh can be estimated from the HR data as the weighted mean of hv012 by strata. The same approach can be used for Congo Democratic Republic DHS 2014.

Thank you both Bridgette and Dr. Elkasabi,

Your suggestions have been immensely helpful and allowed me to proceed further in my analysis. I am now encountering another issue, but I created a new topic for it. Again, thank you lots!
