We are working on the set of parent discipline questions in the household surveys from Haiti from 2012 and 2016. In 2016 (Cycle 7) there is a specific variable for child age for the one child in the household corresponding to the parent discipline questions. However, we cannot find a specific child age variable in the 2012 (Cycle 6) data. Our understanding is that one eligible child per household is selected randomly for this question set but it is not obvious to us how to determine which child was the focus in 2012 to tie age and sex to the responses. Thanks for any help.

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

You need to go to the HR file--for this survey, HTHR61FL.dta. The child discipline variables are sh160-sh169. The line number of the child, within the household, is given by sh159. What I would do would be to open the HR file, keep only hv001, hv002, and sh159-sh169. Rename sh159 to be hvidx. Open the KR or BR file, and change v001 to hv001, v002 to hv002, and b16 to hvidx. Sort both files on hv001 hv002 b16 and do a merge. The child discipline module also includes children whose mother is not in the household. They will not merge with the KR or BR file, but they could be among the children with the greatest risk of being severely disciplined.
