I am currently trying to work with KR recode files of DHS 2015-16 Survey for India, and I want to calculate the h/a, w/a and w/h z-scores for children aged 0-59 m. However, I am very confused as to how to go about it. I see the KR recode file has h/a, w/a and w/h standard deviation (new WHO) variables but does that mean that I apply the z-score formula on this data set or do I calculate it separately using child's height in cms and child's weight in kilograms variables and then compare those z-scores with the reference 'new WHO' dataset?

A detailed guidance would be highly appreciated, as soon as possible.

Thank you in advance.

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

These variables are in the PR file with prefix hc and the KR file with prefix hw. In the KR file, hw70, hw71, and hw72 are the HAZ, WAZ, and WHZ, respectively. They have been multiplied by 100. There are special codes 9994 to 9996 for refused, etc.

IAKR74FL.dta includes h4, h7, and h10, which are labelled as percentiles. You can ignore them. All the anthropometry information is in hw2-hw3 and hw70-hw72. Age in days is calculated as the difference between day of measurement and day of birth. See https://www.dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/MR16/MR16.pdf and other DHS reports on anthropometry.
