Many people have trouble understanding when we say, "the bottom wealth quintile" but can easily understand, "less than 2$ a day".

Is it possible to assign a dollar amount to the wealth index factor score? Or at least, is it possible to assign a range of possible incomes, daily expenditures, or net worth based on the wealth index factor score? Does anyone have any experience trying to map the quintiles to $ amounts, perhaps using other country data?

Please see the response below from Sara Riese, Senior Demographic and Health Researcher:

While the wealth index factor score and quintiles cannot by themselves be used to estimate income, there are some groups that have linked the DHS quintiles to other income or consumption surveys to estimate individual or household income based on the wealth quintiles. The Asset to Income Estimator (https://m4mgmt.org/asset-to-income-estimator/) does this for many countries with available DHS data, and allows you to estimate individual or household income on a daily, monthly, or annual basis.

Please let me know if there are any questions.

Please see the response below from Sara Riese, Senior Demographic and Health Researcher:

We within the DHS project have not worked on mapping the quintiles to dollar amounts. Please refer to the earlier response for an external resource which has done work in this area.
