Dear dhsprogram team,

I write to make an inquiry on how induced abortion was calculated for in 2017 Ghana Maternity and Health Survey (GMHS). In the 2017 GMHS dataset that I downloaded, I found that induced abortion is 14.77%, compared to the 10% in the GMHS report, miscarriage is 15.6% compared to 12% in the GMHS report, and stillbirth is 4.49% compared to 2% in the GMHS report. Kindly explain to me why this percentages differs and probably how to generate the same percentage with that of the final report.

Thanks and warm regards.

Dear user, are you making sure the denominator is the same? The denominator in Table 6.1 is *pregnancies* among women age 15-49 ending in the 5 years preceding the survey. Which data file are you using?

Thank you,
Lindsay

I am using the women individual recode and the and the variable I am examining is abortion (q207c ). From the simple frequency tabulation I did in stata, result showed that abortion is 14.77% against the 10% reported on page in the document I attached. My question here: is it safe to report 14.8% as the rate of abortion among 15-49 years women in Ghana or is there a further data manipulation that I can do to arrive at 10% in the report attached in this email?

Thank you

Dear user,

Whether it is OK depends on what you are trying to calculate. The percentages do not match because, as the title of table 6.1 specifies, table 6.1 shows that 10.4% of pregnancies in the last five years ended in abortion. What you are calculating, if you are using the women's individual file (I believe this is a raw file and not recode), is the percent of women who experienced abortion. This is based on responses to question 207. Table 6.1 is tabulated based on responses to questions 212/220. Perhaps looking at the questionnaire will help you decide.

Please note that the percent of women who have had an abortion that is not the same thing as an abortion rate. If you want to calculate the abortion rate, you would need to use the pregnancy file, which is unique to Maternal Health surveys. I do not see this as publicly available, so let me follow up.

Thank you,
Lindsay

Dear user, to follow up, you should use the BQ file.

Here are the steps to match table 6.1:

*generate weight
gen wt = qweight/1000000

*time in months since birth/termination using cdc
gen pregend = int((qintcd - q215cd)/ 30.4375)

*all pregnancies that occured in the last 5 years
gen pregall5yr = 1 if pregend <60

*tabulate pregnancy outcome among pregnancies in the last 5 years
ta q212c if pregall5yr ==1 [iw=wt]
