Dear all,

I am using DHS data for Honduras and I was wondering whether there could be the possibility to recover the information on municipality (or district, if anything) from the ultimate area unit or complete cluster number variables in the dataset. I have looked at Appendix A of the final DHS report as suggested elsewhere in this forum but I've just found information about the sampling procedure, with no clue on how to match cluster numbers and municipalities.

For the Honduras 2011-12 survey, one way to assign municipality names to the clusters would be to use the coordinates from the GPS dataset within a Geographic Information System (GIS) to join the displaced cluster locations to a municipality boundary polygon shapefile. For the 2005-06 survey, no GPS data was collected so it is only possible to determine the survey region in which the clusters are located. You can view and download the DHS region boundaries for each of our surveys, including for Honduras at the boundaries page of our Spatial Data Repository website: http://spatialdata.dhsprogram.com/boundaries.html?country=HN .

The displacement of the GPS data for the 2011-12 Honduras DHS was restricted at the level of the DHS region (v024 in the recode file). This means that during the cluster displacement process, it was ensured that no clusters crossed any region boundary, but it was possible for a cluster to cross a lower level (e.g. municipality) boundary during the displacement process.

Thank you for your answer to this question. I am also working with Honduras data and would like to avoid using the cluster points. However, the department-level is too large. I think the idea about linking GPS clusters to a municipality shapefile is a great idea (even considering the limitations that data could be displaced outside the municipality).

My question is where you think I can find this shapefile. There doesn't seem to be anything posted publicly. Do you know of a website where this data is available?

Thanks for your post. A good source of country-level GIS data on administrative areas is GADM (http://www.gadm.org/). You can download municipality shapefiles from there. The Humanitarian Response website is usually a good source as well https://cod.humanitarianresponse.info/country-region, but they do not seem to have any data on the municipalities of Honduras. Please note that boundary representations from public sources are not necessarily authoritative.

We advise caution when conducting your analysis at smaller administrative levels such as municipalities, since the surveys were not designed to be representative below the DHS regions level.
