Dear all,

We are analyzing data on intimate partner violence and child nutrition using the Honduras DHS 2011-12. I am having issues importing the dataset to PSSP which is a similar statistical program to SPSS. I imported the dataset file .dat and converted it to Excel CSV. However once I imported it to PSSP there are no column headers of the variables and I am unable to recognize the variables. Is there another better way to import the data? Would it be better to import the data to R?

If you convert to Excel, then yes, you will lose the labels. I haven't used PSPP for some time, but I believe that you can use the .SPS commands found in the flat ASCII format download file to import the data. You should then have a file in memory with the labels. Saving the file as an Excel CSV file you will then lose the labels. Instead, I suggest saving the file as a system file.

Alternatively, I believe that PSPP can read the ,sav files diretly, so you should be able to download the SPSS files (SV) directly, and these files include all of the labels.

Thank you very much for your response Trevor. I downloaded the SPSS files directly and now I am able to see the variable labels. I have another question. If I save my files as a system file, is it possible to import these files to R to be able to run the analyses with this statistical program?
