Percentage of households with at least one member who is a nomadic pastoralist
Number of people who are nomadic pastoralists

Mobile pastoralist populations are among the most "missing" populations in global health. While any individual mobile pastoralist population may be small, taken as a whole key population group, the numbers may be significant 50-100 million globally by some accounts. However, the reality is that we don't know how many mobile pastoralists exist across sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Asia, nor do we have an understanding of their use of health and other services, though the limited data available suggests that nomadic pastoralists may have significantly worse social and health outcomes than settled populations. As the global health community turns its focus to universal health coverage and fragile states, reaching nomadic pastoralist populations will be critical. These populations may regularly cross international borders and are often living in fragile states (Somalia, Niger, South Sudan, Chad, Ethiopia, etc.) The best estimates we, as a community, have for the number of pastoral nomads are a quarter century old. Understanding the scope and location of nomadic pastoralist populations will allow national governments to respond to the health needs of these communities and make progress toward the 2030 goal of universal health coverage.
