Both the questionnaire and the Final Report for Myanmar 2015 DHS suggest that questions were asked about the frequency of domestic violence in the past 12 months, but in the dataset, I do not see these variables. There are variables recording domestic violence by the current husband/partner (ever), but nothing about frequency OR any questions about domestic violence by the current husband/partner in the last 12 months. Were these questions removed from the dataset (and if so, why?)? Am I just missing them (and if so, what are they named in the dataset)? Thank you.

Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Kerry MacQuarrie:

Please see the Guide to DHS Statistics Chapter 17 for more information. While the questionnaire indicates that the respondent is asked two separate questions for each domestic violence item (1204A Did your (last) husband ever ________?; if yes: 1204B How often did this happen during the last 12 months?), in the IR recode file, these two questions are coded to a single variable for each domestic violence item. These variables are d103a-d103c (emotional violence items); d105a-d105f and d105j (physical violence items); and d105h, d105i, and d105k (sexual violence items). The response options on these variables are:

0. Never
1. Often
2. Sometimes
3. Yes, but not in the last 12 months

0 reflects women who responded no to question 1204A while 1, 2, and 3 reflects the response to question 1204B given by those women who responded yes to question 1204A.

Thank your response. I am having trouble finding another variable, the answer to the question: Is a wife justified for refusing sex if she knows her husband is having sex with other women? I see it in the questionnaire, the Final Report, and in the dataset for the man questionnaire, but not in the dataset for the woman's questionnaire. Thank you!

Try using the IPUMS-DHS site, which allows users to do a web-based search on a string or variable. If you click on the variable name, you can learn more about the variable, including its codes and frequencies, meaning, universe (who was asked the question), and question wording. Easily log in with your DHS user name email and password.

Thank you for your response. The variable I am looking for does not show up in the IPUMS search that you suggested, although summary statistics for it are available in the Final Report. Does this mean that there is no way to access this variable, even though it seems to be available (given the Final Report, Table 13.6)?
