I have a question regarding question V766A number of sexual partners, excluding spouse, in the past 12 months.

When referring to spouse, are only spouses excluded or do you also include boyfriends/girlfriends?

We would like to do an analysis on "casual partners" so our question is: if we simply use V766A >0 does this mean that this person had at least one casual partner in the past 12 months?

Is there a common term used for those with sexual partners that are not their spouse?

Following is a response from Senior DHS Specialist, Kerry MacQuarrie:

The value held in v766a (mv766a in the men's data) refers to number of sexual partners excluding spouses/live-in partners (which is the way DHS measures marriage). Boyfriends/girlfriends are excluded unless the respondent is living with them as if married.

Use v766b/mv766b if you want the number of sexual partners INCLUDING spouses/partners in the last 12 months. Variables v767a, v767b, v767c (and mv767a-c) provide data one the relationship to the sexual partner in the last 12 months.
