Difference between Woman and Couples recode [message #16220]

I see that the couples recode contains only those individual which mutually declared to be together.
However, with reference to the Afghanistan DHS 2015, I see that the woman individual recode counts 29,000 (circa) and the couples recode only 10,000.

Interestingly, keeping married woman with non-missing information on their partners (age and education) from the individual women recode leads to a sample of 28,000.

I do not understand this massive discrepancy between the two recodes.

Following is a response from the Chief of Data Processing, Guillermo Rojas:

I believe that the issue here is that there is a sub-sample for men. Men were only interviewed in 50% of the households, as a result couples cannot be generated in households where men were not interviewed.

Thank you very much.
That's exactly the reason (I checked the number of obs. for the AfDHS 2015 male recode).
And because the excluded males are done so at random, the results do not change (much) when switching from the couples to the female recode.
