Hi,
I want to look at the infant mortality across regions in Uganda, and use the surveys from 2000, 2006, 2011 and 2016. When looking at the variable "v024 - region" in the birth records the number of regions varies from 4 in 2000, 9 in 2006, 10 in 2011, to 14 in 2016. Are there no stabil variable that tells which region is being surveyed? Or is there a way of knowing which of the 14 regions equals the 4 regions?
Best regards,
Synnøve

If you use IPUMS DHS, you can select an integrated geography variable that matches regions across surveys. Our geographers have not only matched the names of regions, but also checked their boundaries.
There are two options for Uganda: geo_ug1995_2016 goes back to the very early surveys, but has only four regions. geo_ug2006_2016 includes eight regions.
I would recommend selecting the Ugandan samples before browsing the geography variables using the Topics drop-down menu.
If you are not familiar with IPUMS DHS, it is a tool that allows you to select the samples and variables you want, to create a single, integrated file with fully harmonized variables.
I hope you find this helpful.
