I am working on sources of drinking water focusing on the springs. The data provided by the surveys are classified as protected springs and unprotected springs. I would like to know that how are they defined as protected or unprotected? Does protected mean spring box attached at the source or the water is piped from spring till the household.
Thank you in advance

A response from Senior Technical Expert, Dr. Kia Reinis:
Quote:
Water "piped from spring to till the household" would be coded as "piped into dwelling" or "piped into yard/plot" or "piped to neighbor" depending to where it's pipes. Or it may be piped to a "public tap"/standpipe".
Protected and unprotected springs are defined:
Protected spring:
A spring protected from runoff, bird droppings, and animals by a "spring box" which is typically constructed of brick, masonry, or concrete and is built around the spring so that water flows directly out of the box into a pipe without being exposed to outside pollution.
Unprotected spring:
A spring that is subject to runoff and/or bird droppings or animals. Unprotected springs typically do not have a "spring box".
And in the context of dug wells, protected/unprotected are defined:
Protected dug well:
A dug well that is (1) protected from runoff water through a well lining or casing that is raised above ground level and a platform that diverts spilled water away from the well and (2) covered so that bird droppings and animals cannot fall down the hole. Both conditions must be observed for a dug well to be considered as protected.
Unprotected dug well:
A dug well which is (1) unprotected from runoff water; (2) unprotected from bird droppings and animals; or (3) both.

Hi
Thank you so much for clearing my doubt.
I had one more concern.
Is there anyway to find out the source of piped water into the household? As you said that the piped water can have it's source as a spring and will be piped from the start of the spring till the household. Is there any method or data which can help me know the source of a piped water systems for various countries?

Dear User, a response from Senior Data Processing expert, Mr. Guillermo Rojas,
Quote:
Based on the information collected in DHS questionnaires, it isn't possible to know what is the source of water piped into households. For any given survey that source could be from an indeterminate number of sources depending on the location of the household.
