What are the DHS regions based on? [message #15060]

Hi all,

I am working on a set of 32 Sub-Saharan African countries in waves 3 to 7 and I want to include regional fixed-effects in my model. For that purpose, I need to know whether the regional classification for each country (and wave) resembles the official administrative region structure. I have seen in other threads, that it sometimes is not the case.

Is there a list that shows what the region classification of each country is based on?

If I know that the DHS region for a country is not the official administrative region, then I will use data from gadm.org. But since this process of including gadm data is time-consuming, it would save me some time to know for which countries I don't have to do this.

Hi Timo,

Sometimes surveys are representative at the Admin1 level and sometimes the survey is representative at larger areas. Rarely, are surveys representative at the Admin2 level. The best way to check to see how the regions were created is to check the boundaries on the spatial data repository.
