Hi all,

I am working on a paper where I use geo-referenced DHS data. I have two questions regarding this:

1. I have read in several papers now, that georeferenced data is only available from 2001 onwards. But on this website: https://dhsprogram.com/data/available-datasets.cfm it states that GPS data is also available for time periods before that. Can anyone tell me the definitive time frame? And is it linked to certain DHS waves?

2. I noticed that the geo-referenced datasets not necessarily match the other recode file. For example, I have a file called CMGE43 but the corresponding individual record is CMIR44. But this should make no difference, because both 3 and 4 as last digit indicate the same thing - "first survey", right?

Help would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot!
Best
Timo

Hi Timo,

1) The datasets with points available are the surveys with some kind of geolocation. There are some surveys within the past few years that did not collect GPS data, so it is hard to promise that all surveys from some point forward have points. There were some surveys in the late 80s through the 90s that were geolocated as a part of the West Africa Spatial Analysis Prototype (WASAP). Most of the points from WASAP were located using gazetteers and other materials.

2) I would check on this page (https://dhsprogram.com/data/File-Types-and-Names.cfm), but broadly, yes those should be for the same survey.

best,
