Hi all,

I am interested in looking at the relationship between maternal experiences of IPV (domestic violence) and infant mortality in the NFHS4. I'm not sure whether to use the women's or births file, and how to calculate mortality for children who died before the age of 12 months. I'm using SAS. I know the B5 variables in the women's file give the mortality status of each child. However, since they are separate for each child (B5_01, B5_02...) I'm not sure how to narrow it to kids who survived or died within the first 12 months of life.

Thank you in advance for your help!

You probably want to use the births (BR) file. The domestic violence variables are included in this file and can be analyzed with the births data. See the Guide to DHS Statistics for more information on the calculation of infant mortality.

Thank you! However, I just checked the births file and it doesn't appear to include any DV variables. Do they have different variable names?

Thanks for your assistance!

Sorry, you are right. They are not output as part of the BR file, but they are in the IR files and can be merged from that file into the BR file. Just use CASEID as the variable for merging.
