Hello,

I am working with DHS data from Sub-Saharan Africa from all years with HIV test results. When looking at the HIV test data, hiv03, there are codes that were unexpected and I cannot find their meaning from the country's publications. From my understanding, the coding should be 0 as HIV negative and 1 as HIV positive. There are also values of 2,3,7, and 8 in hiv03.

I've attached a file that denotes the frequency of these values by country and survey.

Dear User,
If you look at the .dcf or map file for each data set you will see the labels for HIV03. Please see the labels for Angola. The labels are similar for all surveys but there are some variations so you will want to check that.

index.php?t=getfile&id=861&private=0

You will also want to look at the chapter on HIV prevalence in the final reports to look at the algorithm used. In Angola P248. The chapter in general will provide a lot of useful information.

Hope this helps.
