Hello, I am writing to ask for help with linking DHS data and SPA data.

I am trying to link DHS and SPA data (Facility Record and Provider Record data sets) for Malawi, Tanzania and Senegal. While DHS data has Cluster Number the two SPA data sets (Provider Record and Facility Record) have Region and District information.

Is there a way I can link the two data sets?

Thank you,

Sebawit

Following is a response from Chief of Data Processing, Guillermo Rojas:

DHS and SPA are two different surveys based on different sampling frames and methodology. There is not a direct link between the two surveys that allow to merge them for further analysis. Nonetheless, some analysts have successful linked these two surveys. The DHS publication describes possible alternatives of doing this merge according to topics of analysis. You may also want to consult other references mentioned in the document.

Hi, I don't see any attachment here. I have the same problem. My question is: Are SPA surveys implemented in the same clusters? Where can I find the sampling strategy of SPA surveys for each country?

Thanks,

Saleh

Following is a response from Senior DHS SPA Specialist, Claudia Marchena:

No, health facilities in a country are not located necessarily in clusters that were selected for a prior DHS survey. In case there is a health facility located in a cluster that was previously selected for a DHS survey, this will be just a coincidence. The Ministry of Health in a country is the institution that provides the location of health facilities in countries which constitutes the sampling frame for SPA surveys.
