Hi everyone,
I want to examine the pattern of contraception use before and after unintentional pregnancy and see if there any changes.

My question is how I can access calendar data to see the pattern of contraception respondents used before pregnancy?

The DHS questionnaire includes a calendar of birth, pregnancies and contraception use for the past five years, means contraception method prior to the pregnancies covered by the calendar.

Please could you explain how can how can I do this.

Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!

Dear Liz,
Thank you for your reply and link which was very helpful. In module 3, there is an option to calculate method used before pregnancy and postpartum family planning. From these, is it possible to calculate what types of contraception a respondent used before pregnancy and after pregnancy, i.e change of contraception using pattern before and after pregnancy for a respondent. I guess its possible as we have the data both before and after pregnancy. Stata code to calculate these much appreciate.
I look forward to your reply.

With thanks

Yes, it is certainly possible to look at the changes in contraceptive use. Unfortunately I do not have time to prepare any code for this for a while, but the tutorial modules give examples looking at method use before a pregnancy and a similar approach can be used for the period after the pregnancy.

Dear User,
Please refer to the Standard Questionnaires on our website. https://www.dhsprogram.com/publications/Publication-Search.cfm The Woman's questionnaire will give you a good idea of the types of questions asked in most surveys. Questions 406 and 407 in the women's questionnaire references questions about timing of the pregnancy that relate to unwantedness. We have these questions in just about all DHS surveys. Once you start working with a survey or several surveys you will need the Standard Recode Manual https:// dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-DHSG4-DHS-Questionna ires-and-Manuals.cfm to assist you in working with the standard recode variables. In addition to this we recommend referencing The Guide to DHS Statistics https:// www.dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-dhsg1-dhs-questi onnaires-and-manuals.cfm.
