Hi,

In Dominican Republic data set 2013, there is a question about "Last 12 months received information about: safe handling of drinking water" (column SH65B). I checked several countries and they do not have this information. Could you inform me which countries have this question besides Dominican Republic? Thank you.

Best,
Daniel

Dear User,
You may want to try the link for IPUMS https://blog.dhsprogram.com/idhs-mpc/
Since these are country specific variables, without this tool you would need to go through each household questionnaire to find this or a similar variable.

The standard model household questionnaire for DHS7 has the question:
AH108 (Recode variable HV225. This variable should be available in most datasets) What do you usually do to make the water safer to drink? Anything else?
A. BOIL
B. ADD BLEACH/CHLORINE
C. STRAIN THROUGH A CLOTH
D. USE WATER FILTER (CERAMIC/SAND/COMPOSITE/TEC)
E. SOLAR DISINFECTION
F. LET IT STAND AND SETTLE
X. OTHER __________
Z. DON'T KNOW

If you choose women as your unit of analysis in IPUMS-DHS (at idhsdata.org), you will find variables related to water treatment in the variable group "Toilet and water":
https://www.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/group?id=hhol d_toilwat

Looking across the page, you'll see X's that indicate those samples that include specific variables. You can thus see how many of the 117 samples included in IPUMS-DHS had values for HV37 (Household uses any method to treat water), as well as many standard and country-specific variables on particular methods of water treatment. Based on my memory, countries are much more likely to ask what the household DOES to treat water, or where it gets its drinking water (HV201) than whether they got information about how to safely handle drinking water. If you decide to make a dataset using data through IPUMS-DHS, just log in using your regular DHS email and password.

Unfortunately, IPUMS-DHS does not yet include data from the Dominican Republic, but it does currently cover 28 countries.
