Hello,

I am doing a research project on Nigeria and I am using the household survey data file from the year 2013 and 2008. In the 2013 household data file, you have multiple variables for education completed in single years from hv108_01 to hv108_35. I just wanted to ask you what do the numbers from 1 to 35 represent? And if I have to combine household data on education completion for the entire year do i have to sum up all of these variables from hv108_01 to hv108_35?

Thank you so much.

Dear User, A response from technical expert, Mr. Trevor Croft:
Quote:

1 to 35 are for each individual household member, with the maximum being 35 members in a household.
I would suggest that the user might want to use the Person's recode (PR) file. Where each household member has a separate record and thus you will only find hv108 without any suffix.

Hello,

Thank you so much for your reply. I have an additional question. So if 1 to 35 represents the members of the household and we are just interested in the education of the household head then does _1 represents the household head?

Thank you so much once again.

Best,

The person assigned the value for _1 in the household file is usually but not always the household head. Note the following results giving the line number in the household roster of the household head across samples, using variable HV218.

https://www.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/HV218#codes_s ection

In some samples, there is a one-to-one correspondence between household heads and persons assigned lineno 1, while other samples have exceptions (results based on the PR files). An alternative is using HV101, for relationship to household head, to identify household heads in the PR file (and use HV108 for education in completed years of schooling).

Incidentally, IPUMS-DHS just added household members as a unit of analysis in our database, so you may be able to make a data file for analysis using the PR data available from IPUMS-DHS (choose household members as the unit of analysis), as an alternative to working with the DHS PR files.
