Good Morning Liz,
I am working on the prevalence and correlates of Reproductive coercion in Nigeria using the NDHS 2013. Reproductive coercion is deﬁned as behaviors intended to maintain power and control in a relationship such that interferes with contraception use and pregnancy. It is encompasses pregnancy coercion, contraceptive sabotage and control of pregnancy outcomes.
In my preliminary assessment, using a secondary dataset already limits my choice of definition since i cant influence the questions. Since reproductive coercion includes;
1. All women who intend to have more children but partner hinders their decision by enforcing contraception.
2. All women who do not desire more children but partner influences fertility decision by opposing contraception.
3. All women who do not desire more children and cannot negotiate condom with partner especially if she is not on any contraceptive
4. Partner willfully sabotaging contraceptive use.
5. Partner in any way physically or emotionally influences pregnancy outcome either by forcing the continuation or termination of a pregnancy.
Unfortunately not many studies have tried estimating prevalence of reproductive coercion using a Secondary dataset. My estimate intends to use all women currently living with partner or in union with partner as study population, while the target population will include two categories of women calculated as experiencing reproductive coercion as (1.)women whose fertility preferences is not wanting more children (V602=3), not currently on any form of contraceptive (V312=0) and whose reason for not using contraceptive is that partner/husband opposes (V3A08J) as well as (2.) women who do not desire more children, not on any method as well as not being able to negotiate condom (V850B=0).
Unfortunately this greatly under estimates reproductive coercion, but in this context am i right in my NDHS definition? if no, what will best capture it and are there other possible definitions derivable from the NDHS using the above numbered criterias? I will be grateful for your assistance.

For example a woman's partner may oppose contraception but her citing that as a reason for non-use does not necessarily imply she was coerced into non-use. Ultimately this type of definitional question is really up to the judgment of the analyst rather than to someone at DHS. Perhaps by posting on the user forum, other analysts with expertise in the topic area will weigh in.

Hopefully, someone knowledgeable on this subject will see this and respond.
