Dear DHS team,

I've noticed that the variable v104 ("years lived in place of residence) is not part of the core DHS questionnaire as of phase 6. Could you please let me know if decision to drop the question was made due to problems with data quality regarding this variable? I would like to work with DHS data from Nigeria and make use of this variable (I'm planning to use phase 5) but I'm worried that the exclusion of this variable in later phases may indicate quality problems.

Kind regards
Christian Bommer

Following is a response from Senior DHS Specialist, Fred Arnold:

Quote:
There was no problem with the data quality, although there was often some ambiguity about the meaning of CURRENT PLACE OF RESIDENCE, especially in urban areas. The feeling was that there had been very little use of that information, and researchers who were interested in doing migration analysis would really need much more information than was being collected. When the DHS-6 questionnaire was being designed, there was an attempt to delete some low priority questions to keep the questionnaire of manageable size. That question is now back in the DHS-7 model questionnaire, but CURRENT PLACE OF RESIDENCE has been changed to CURRENT CITY, TOWN, OR VILLAGE OF RESIDENCE to make the meaning clearer. A new question has also been added in DHS-7 to provide more detailed migration information ("Before you moved here, which [PROVINCE/REGION/STATE] did you live in?").

Thank you very much for your quick and helpful response. Is there any way of identifying migrants in phase 6? It is not really necessary for me to know the full migration history of respondents. Instead, I would just need to know if the respondent has at any time in her life not lived where she was interviewed.

Nevermind, I've just seen a post where this question has already been asked and answered. Sorry!
