Hi,

I would like to investigate the attitudes of adolescent boys and girls about gender roles in all DHS surveys published during the last 10 years. On the DHS website I found that questions on gender roles are asked in some countries (within the DHS Women's Status Module).Does somebody know how I can find out in which countries questions about gender roles were asked (without needing to check all the databases seperately)?

Dear User,
Most of the DHS surveys have questions on gender roles. Concentrate on the DHS surveys and not SPAs, AIS or MIS surveys. If you do a search of surveys with Women's Status that should give you what you the surveys you need to look at. Attached is a partial list to get you started. If you hover over the comments, most comments contain the questions asked in the questionnaire. If you have additional questions, please feel free to post again.

Another way to identify variables of interest and which samples they are in is to look at the variable display on the IPUMS-DHS website. For example, you might want to see which samples include questions about attitudes toward domestic violence. Note the information at the following link, in which an X indicates that the sample directly above includes this variable:

If you want to see which samples include variables about household decision-making, see below:

Also potentially relevant are variables relating to attitudes toward sex, including when a woman can refuse sex:

A few samples include questions about attitudes toward marriage and education for sons versus daughters:

It's worth exploring the website to find other variables that you think fit your own definition of gender roles and attitudes. Also, you can use the Search tool to find out detailed information about variables you've already identified as of interest. And once you have decided which samples and variables interest you, you can log in with your DHS email and password and download a customized data file for your research project.
