Hello everyone-
We are trying to get an estimate on deaths within a household within the last year/two years for Malawi DHS 2000, DHS 2004, and DHS 2010.
However, it seems like we can only find this information in the household recode file database for Malawi DHS 2010, variables hv249/hv250, which ask: number of members who died last 12 months. Does anyone know whether this variable exists in DHS 2004 or DHS 2000? I couldn't find it, so if it really only exists for DHS 2010, does anyone know why?
It seems like the most common form of reporting adult mortality across DHS datasets is through the sibling survivorship data. The reason why using this might be complicated is that we are interested in mortality and the location of that mortality, but of course individual's siblings don't necessarily live near each other, so this can be an imprecise measure of mortality in that location.
Any suggestions?
Jonathan

Dear User,
I checked the Malawi DHS 2000 and Malawi DHS 2004 and did not see the two variables you mentioned. HV249 and HV250. Those types of questions were not asked and also were not part of the Standard Questionnaire. Those variables were really only a part of the 5th round of the recode manual. Both Malawi DHS 2000 and Malawi DHS 2004 were part of the 4th round of the recode manual. Malawi DHS 2010 was a part of the 5th round of the recode manual. After the 5th round, they were again taken out so you would not see them in future surveys unless they decided to add them as country specific. For more information about the recode manual versions, please visit this link:

Thank you!
