I'm trying to duplicate the literacy question included in your surveys, specifically in Ghana. Would you mind sharing with me the sentence (in English) used to evaluate literacy? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks so much!

Dear Emily,
I am not exactly sure what was used in Ghana but I did look at our standard core questionnaire for the woman and found the following:
Each card should have four simple sentences appropriate to the country (e.g., "Parents love their children.",
"Farming is hard work.", "The child is reading a book.", "Children work hard at school."). Cards should be
prepared for every language in which respondents are likely to be literate.

Our current core questionnaires can be found on our website http://www.measuredhs.com/publications/publication-DHSQ6-DHS -Questionnaires-and-Manuals.cfm
The following web page has links to all previous phases as well. http://www.measuredhs.com/What-We-Do/Survey-Types/DHS-Questi onnaires.cfm#CP_JUMP_16175

Hope this helps!

Dear Emily,

Translated these sentences to the local languages, the laminated cards with these sentences were then given to each interviewer, so during the interview they will pass the cards on to the respondent and ask to read back.
SENTENCES FOR Q.112: ENGLISH

1. The child is reading a book.
2. The rains came late this year.
3. Parents must care for their children.
4. Farming is hard work.

I don't think I thanked you for your help with this before and I'm using this again for another survey, so just referred back. Thanks, this has been very helpful!
