Hello,

I have never used the DHS data before and I am assessing whether I can use it for a project on Sickle cell anemia trait (Carriers) and Malaria. I know the survey tests for hemoglobin levels to identify anemia, but I am not sure if there is any way of identifying individuals with sickle cell anemia or sickle cell carriers ?

Does the data have a blood smear notes section - which could identify sickle shaped cells ? or does the data record if any of the individuals are on sickle cell anemia drugs ?

PS: Country wise I am only interested in countries with high malaria and sickle cell anemia rates( hence only within Africa)

Thanks

The tests for anemia are conducted using Hemocue Hb201 machines. These provide a quick measurement of the hemoglobin from capillary blood, but does not provide any other information. For more information on the measurement of anemia, please see Chapter 4 of the biomarker field manual.
