Hi!

I observe that in NFHS-III and NFHS-IV, there are separate questions about religion, caste and caste category in the women's questionnaire, apart from those already asked in the household questionnaire. These questions are absent in the NFHS-II while in NFHS-I, the questions asked to the woman are about the caste and religion of the head of the household. Since the questions have been modified in the last two rounds, do they correspond to the caste of the woman before her marriage, since in many instances, they are different than that reported by her husband. Also, if such was the intention of these questions, was any effort made on the part of the surveyor to clarify this to the respondent?

Hi Bridgette!
Sorry for bothering but what does your response "duplicated" mean? Was it because this question has been posted earlier, or because I posted it twice by mistake? I am sorry I could not find a similar question posted earlier. I would be great if you could assist me.

Following is a response from Senior DHS Specialist, Fred Arnold:

The caste and tribe responses depend on self-reporting by the respondent (or reporting about the head of the household by the household respondent). No definitions are given to them. Presumably, they will report whatever they consider themselves (or the head of the household) to be at the time of the survey.
