Dear User Forum,

I am working with several colleagues on an analysis that utilizes the calendar from the Nigeria 2013 dataset. We are trying to determine the variable labels for column 1 of the vcal variable.

1. The labels listed in the questionnaire section of the Nigeria DHS 2013 final report (Appendix F, page 510) differ from the labels listed in the Recode 6 Manual (page 98). Should we be using the labels listed in the questionnaire section of the Nigeria DHS 2013 final report (and not the labels in the Recode 6 Manual)?

2. In the dataset, one of the codes for column 1 of the vcal variable is "W;" however, it is not clear what "W" stands for (there is no "W" code listed in Appendix F, page 510 of Nigeria final report). Can you please help us determine what "W" refers to in this dataset?

Thank you for your help!

Best regards,

Carie

Dear User,
Your post is very similar to an earlier post on the website. Please refer to the answer provided by one of our technical experts, Mr. Trevor Croft:
http://http://userforum.dhsprogram.com/index.php?t=msg&t h=569&goto=7066&S=8978b1e9feb1bc62ee21965e2e11b331#m sg_7066. It would be useful to follow the entire thread on this topic. If you still have questions after reviewing this section, please post again. For your analysis, you should be using the codes in the recode file. Code W in col1 1 stands for "other".
Thank you!

Dear Liz,

Thank you very much for your quick response. I followed the thread that you provided and it was very useful but led me to a new question! I now understand that I need to use the codes in the recode file for the variable vcal1. The vcal1 variable in the Nigeria 2013 dataset includes codes "K" and "M," which are not defined in the recode file. How do I find out what these codes mean?

Thank you,

Carie

Dear User,
Thank you for writing again. I checked the recode application and I reached out to one of our experts, Mr. Noureddine Abderrahim. We were able to come up with an answer for you.

The K code in your recode data is actually a country specific variable which stands for Standard Days Method
The M code in your recode data is for Other modern method

Thank you!
