What is the best way to get an overview of the various series that include alcohol use items? I am exploring what data are available and for which questionnaire items.
Thank you,

Dear User,
Our website http://dhsprogram.com/ has a search where you can search by survey characteristics. I selected "completed surveys" and selected "survey characteristics". Once there I clicked on alcohol consumption. I then clicked on the search button which appears at the bottom. This will give you the surveys where questions on "alcohol consumption" were asked. Usually in your analysis you would need to select for standard recode variables and country specific variables to identify all the different variables for your analysis. I am attaching a apreadsheet which shows you the questions which were asked in each of the completed surveys regarding this topic. The specifc questions asked can be found by hovering over the comments. This amount of detail normally does not exist for every survey characteristic or every survey, but I happen to have it for alcohol consumption. In the standard recode file, country specific variables will start with the letter S and follow the questionnaire numbering. For example: If you had a country specific variable which came from a specific country survey questionnaire (as an example) Q535 then in the recode file, it would be called S535. Standard recode variables for the woman are:
V835A Alcohol consumption at last sex with most recent partner
V845B
V835C
in the domestic violence section
D113
D114
You would need to find similar recode variables for the men. These would start with M and follow the same naming convention.

For the samples currently included in IPUMS-DHS, you can check the "alcohol" variables under "Health behaviors" when you choose women as the unit of analysisl Here the display of available variables on alcohol consumption, with an X indicating that the variable is included in the survey listed directly above:
https://www.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/group?id=hbeh av_alc
Note that most of the variables have new names given by IPUMS-DHS, since the original country-specific variable names varied greatly across surveys.
Here's another list of alcohol-related variables, that I pulled up by entering the term "alcohol" into the search box, with women as the unit of analysis:
https://www.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/live_search
Of the variables you are interested in are country-specific and non-standard, it's simple to look for them using the Search function on the IPUMS-DHS select data page.
