Hello,

I need the religious distribution of the household member population by age groups from NFHS-1. However, as far as I can tell, religion is only available in the women's dataset and not in the household or household schedule datasets for NFHS-1. Since the question on religion regards the household head's religion, I merged the women's V130 variable into the household dataset using V001 and V002, but this leaves nearly 14,000 households with a missing religion variable since they didn't have any eligible women (discarding women who were not usual residents of the household leaves even more households with a missing religion variable).

I checked the raw household dataset, and the religion variable seems to be in it (AIRELIG). Is it possible to merge this AIRELIG variable from the raw household dataset to the regular/processed household/household member datasets? I thought using HHPSU (sample point number) and HHNUMBER (household number) in the raw dataset would be the same as using HV001 (cluster number) and HV002 (household number) to make a household id, but HHPSU and HV001 seem to be coded quite differently (HHNUMBER has 1-3 digits, whereas HV001 has 4-5 digits). Is there some other way to merge variables from the raw household dataset to the processed/regular household/household member datasets?

Thank you,
Paola

Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum reviewed your post, and does not believe this merge is possible.
