Respected Sir/ Madam,

I, Vivek Verma, am a research scholar in Dept. of Statistics, Gauhati Univ., Assam, India. For my research I am using the DHS data of India-2003-05. To calculate the fertility rates I have used the SAS codes that are suggested by you (in attached file), but the problem which occurred in my case is that ASFR and TFR are found to be more that the reported values.

For e.g., regarding India the reported TFR in NFHS-3 is 2.68, where as the one we got through using program is 2.71, similarly, for Uttar Paredesh (V024=9) reported TFR is 3.82, where as the one we got through using program is 3.87.

I am sending herewith the SAS codes (the old one) and the report of NFHS-3. Please see the Table 4.3 "Fertility by residence and state (Total)" of page-7.

Please guide me in obtaining the results.

Thanks and Regards,

Vivek Verma

Dear User,
Please take a look at The Guide to DHS Statistics http:// www.dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-dhsg1-dhs-questi onnaires-and-manuals.cfm. This publication is bookmarked. There is a specific bookmark for Fertility. Please take a look at that and if you still have questions, please feel free to post again.
Thank you!
