Hello all,

Please I need explanations and guardinas on how to generate or create variables on DHS datasets that capture male participation in family planning (discussion of family planning among couple, approval of FP by male) and male involvement in maternal and child health activities (man accompany spouse to ANC clinics; whether a spouse considered it crucial for a woman to be attended by a skilled birth attendant and whether a spouse thought that childbearing is only a woman's responsibility)

I have been struggling with male and couple datasets to get these variables.

Thanks for any help to make me understand the DHS dataset further

Thank you.

Dear User,
You may want to take a look at Analytical Study 10 (AS10) http://www.measuredhs.com/publications/publication-AS10-Anal ytical-Studies.cfm Spousal Agreement on Reproductive Preferences on Sub-Saharan Africa (English). Our distributed datasets contain a couples data set if available. For Example: For Nigeria DHS 2008 the Stata couples data file is called ngcr52dt.zip. It also contains a couples file in Flat format, SPSS, and SAS. We also have 2 useful manuals. One is the Standard Recode Manual http://www.measuredhs.com/publications/publication-dhsg4-dhs -questionnaires-and-manuals.cfm and The Guide to DHS Statistics http://www.measuredhs.com/publications/publication-dhsg1-dhs -questionnaires-and-manuals.cfm. Further more all variables for men in the recoded datasets begin with MV and include records:
MREC01 Male respondent's basic data
MREC11 Respondent's basic data
MREC22 Reproduction
MREC31 Contraception Table
MREC32 Contraception knowledge & use
MREC41 Tuberculosis and other health issues
MREC51 Marriage/Exposure
MREC61 Fertility preferences
MREC71 Employment
MREC75 AIDS, STIs and Condom Use
MREC80 AIDS, STIs and Condom Use continuation
MRECGC Female genital cutting
MREC91 Country Specific - Single variables
MREC92 Country Specific
MREC93 Country Specific

Can you provide more detail as to what you are trying to accomplish?
Thanks!

Dear Liz,

Thanks and appreciated the explanation as well as the guidance provided. However, I want to know the variables that speaks to spousal communication or discussion either on family planning or maternal/child health in either couple or male dataset.

Thanks

Kola

Dear User,
Individual Women's Data - Individual Recode (IR)
This dataset has one record for every eligible woman as defined by the household schedule. It contains all the data collected in the women's questionnaire plus some variables from the household. Up to 20 births in the birth history, and up to 6 children under age 5, for whom pregnancy and postnatal care as well as immunization and health data were collected, can be found in this file. The fertility and mortality programs distributed by DHS use this file for data input. The unit of analysis (case) in this file is the woman.

Men's Data - Male Recode (MR)
This dataset has one record for every eligible man as defined by the household schedule. It contains all the data collected in the men's questionnaire plus some variables from the household. The unit of analysis (case) in this file is the man.

Couple's Data - Couple's Recode (CR)
This dataset has one record for every couple. It contains data for married or living together men and woman who both declared to be married (living together) to each other and with completed individual interviews (questionnaires). Essentially the file is the result of linking the two files previously described based on whom they both declared as partners. The unit of analysis (case) in this file is the couple in which both partners were interviewed.

I checked the Standard Recode Manual and found a list of variables with some explanation. Some are directly used to link to get couple's data and others are variables for Men (these start with MV) having to do with family planning:

V034 (woman's variable) Line number of husband as recorded in the household schedule. This variable can be used,
in conjunction with the cluster or sample point number and the household number to match
the women's data with the husbands' data, to allow for the analysis of couples.

MV034 Line numbers of wives as recorded in the household schedule. This is a multiple variable
with entries for up to 8 wives. This variable can be used, in conjunction with the cluster or
sample point number and the household number to match the men=s data with the women's
data, to allow for the analysis of couples. An entry with the value 0 means the wife was not
listed as a member of the household.
MV034A Men's wife or partner. For each of the women listed in MV034, it gives her status being
either "wife" or "partner" of the men. This question is no longer part of the DHS VI core
questionnaire, but the variable is kept in the DHS VI recode.
MV034B Age of wife or partner.
MV035 Number of wives or partners for whom line numbers are given in MV034.

Var Model Description From MREC22
MV213 Whether the respondent's first listed partner is currently pregnant.
MV225 At the time the respondent's partner became pregnant with the current pregnancy, whether
the current pregnancy was wanted then, later or not at all. This question is no longer part of
the DHS VI core questionnaire, but the variable is kept in the DHS VI recode.
BASE: Respondent's whose partner is currently pregnant (MV213 = 1).
Children's fathering
MV245 Number of women the respondent fathered the children with.
MV246 Married to the mother of the first child when he was born. This question is no longer part of
the DHS VI core questionnaire, but the variable is kept in the DHS VI recode.
Youngest child
MV248 Antenatal check-ups for the mother
MV249 Respondent present during check-ups

Sources of Contraception.
Whether the respondent has heard about family planning in the last few months from any of
the following sources:
MV384A On the radio
MV384B On the television
MV384C In a newspaper or magazine
MV395 Discussed FP with health worker last few months.

You might start by looking at the following variables in the women's data (IR data file):

V610 Husband approves FP
V611 Discussed FP with partner
V612 Respondent approves FP
V630A Discussed FP with partner
V630B Discussed FP with mother
V630C Discussed FP with father
V630D Discussed FP with sister(s)
V630E Discussed FP with brother(s)
V630F Discussed FP with daughter(s)
V630G Discussed FP with mother-in-law
V630H Discussed FP with friends/nbrs
V630I Discussed FP with son(s)
V630X Discussed FP with others
V739 Who decides how to spend money
V743A Final say on own health care
V743B Final say on making large household purchases
V743C Final say on making household purchases for dai
V743D Final say on visits to family or relatives
V743E Final say on food to be cooked each day
S719F Final say about children's health care
S719G Final say about children's education

Also look at the equivalent MV variables in the men's data file (MR data file).

You can also use the Couple Recode file (CR data file) that contains women's and men's data joined together for couples and includes both the V variables above and the equivalent MV variables for the wife and husband in each couple.
