Men are included up to a higher age than women as men are more likely to be able to reproduce at a higher age than women and there is often an age gap between men and women, so the family planning and HIV related questions are relevant at higher ages.

In the past we have used upper limits of age 59 or 64 or 54, depending on the country, and often at the country's request. However we find that collecting data for men beyond age 49 yields relatively little additional information than is obtained by only interviewing men up to age 49, so the DHS7 standard questionnaire now uses an age range for men of 15-49 as for women.
