Hello!

I am looking for the Fistula DHS module however am having some trouble. I was reading online that this has it's own module and I know this data is only collected for a subset of countries. Can someone direct me about where to go to find this module?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Dear User,
The fistula module can be found on our website http:// dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-dhsqm-dhs-questionna ires-and-manuals.cfm
To find a list of surveys with questions on fistula or the fistula module, you can do a search from our homepage http://dhsprogram.com/ Under "Tools and Resources", Click on "Survey Search", Click on "Completed Surveys", Click "Select Survey Characteristics", Click on "Fistula". If you have additional questions, please feel free to post again. Thank you!

Hi Liz,

Thanks for your previous help. I have another clarification question.
Are the fistula questions inside the "Individual Module"?

Thus far I have been downloading the individual module into Stata by specifying the variables I want when opening the file since the file
has so many variables Stata will not open otherwise. If the fistula questions are in the "Individual Module" I'm not sure how these variables
are coded (so that I can specify them when I open the file in Stata). I have the Recode manual for DHS ( http://www.dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/DHSG4/Recode6_DHS_22March 2013_DHSG4.pdf) and the fistula question, as far as I can tell, are not mentioned. Therefore I cannot get the variables involved.

Can you tell if the fistula questions are in the "Individual Module" and what the variable names are in the datasets that have fistula questions?
Thanks for all your previous and future help!

Dear Leo,
I looked at the surveys containing fistula questions and came up with a list which is attached. If you hover over the comment's you will see the questions from the questionnaire. Currently, these variable are not assigned standard recode variables. In every case they are country specific. All our country specific (survey specific) variables start with the letter S. In most cases our country specific variables are labeled the same as in the questionnaire, except they begin with the letter S. For example: For Ethiopia DHS 2005 "Q1021 Have you ever heard of obstetric fistula (USE LOCAL TERM)? IF NO PROBE: Have you ever heard of a condition in which a woman continuously leaks urine and/or feces following childbirth?" would be called S1021 in the recode file. In general, Household country specific variables would start with SH. Woman with the letter S and Men's country specific variables with SM. I hope this helps. If you have additional questions, please feel free to post again. Thank you!

For the 28 countries currently included in IPUMS-DHS (available at idhsdata.org), you can identify which samples included questions about fistula and what variables were included:
https://www.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/group?id=fist ula_gen
https://www.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/group?id=fist ula_treat
https://www.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/group?id=fist ula_signs

These variables all had country-specific variable names in original DHS files; IPUMS-DHS has given them standard names and codes to increase comparability across samples. If you click on the name of variable, you can see detailed documentation on the variable, including codes and frequencies, who was asked the question (universe), and question wording. You can log in with your DHS email and password and make a customized dataset with the variables and samples you need for your research.
