Hello,

I am trying to merge wealth index data with children's data for Bangladesh DHS 1996-97. The id variable in the wealth index data (whhid) seems quite different than that of children's data (caseid). Could you kindly advice how can I merge these two datasets?

Thanks in advance.

To merge please use CASEID and WHHID. CASEID = HHID+V003, so you take the first 12 characters as identifiers and match it with the WHHID of the wealth index. WHHID is the equivalent of HHID and it is the first 12 characters of CASEID.

Here is additional response from one of our DP Specialists, Noureddine Abserrahim:

The wealth index data is related to the household. Members who live in the household can use these data. The identification of the child or any member interviewed includes the identification of the household where they live. The ID of the household in the recode file is called HHID and uses 12 characters which includes the cluster number and the household number in the cluster. The woman's ID is called CASEID and uses 15 characters which are composed of the household ID in the first 12 characters and her line number in the household schedule using only 3 characters. For the men, the ID is MCASEID and follow the same rules as for the women.
