Hi,
I have a problem with data extraction using the 'SELECT' software: I selected some variables into the right hand side panel of the software and then tried saving them into an SPSS file by pressing the GO button of the tool bar. Two SPSS files were produced (an SPSS Statistic Syntax File and an SPSS Statistics Data Document). The former contains a list of my selected variables while the latter is empty. I assume the Syntax File is my data definition file so I tried running it on the .DAT file but I discovered that the .DAT file actually contains a VLC Media Player which has 7 options: Media, Playback, Audio, Video, Tools, View and Help. How do I run the Syntax file in the VLC Player? I don't know what I am doing wrong. Kindly advice.
Regards,
Ahmed

Using EGKR61FL.ZIP as our example:

Extract the .dat and the .sps files from the zip. Run the SELECT utility, select the variables of interest in the left panel, then click "GO" to create your new syntax file. Give it any name, e.g. newdata.sps. Open the newdata.sps in SPSS, and run it on the original .dat file: EGKR61FL.DAT. You might need to modify the path in line 1 of newdata.sps. This should create your new dataset.

Please note that EGKR61FL.DAT is the Hierarchical ASCII data (not a VLC Media Player file).

You can post again if you still have problems.

Dear Bridgette,
Thanks for the response. I was able to extract the data after reading your response.I realized the mistake I made was trying to run the syntax file in the .dat file contained in the Flat ASCII data instead of the one contained in the Hierarchical ASCII data.

Regards,
Ahmed.
